Problem Solving
PROBLEM-SOLVING measures the typical problems or difficult or sensitive situations you would be called upon to solve or deal with in the normal course of your work.
From the list below, please select the level of problem solving that is most representative of your position.

The issues or situations I face are typically the same from day-to-day. The actions I take to solve them are the same from day-to-day (for example, laundry work, custodial work, general filing, sorting mail, photocopy machine operation.)

I deal with problems or situations by making decisions from a limited set of options (for example, posting to a ledger, telephone operation and reception of visitors, taking inventory).

I deal with issues or problems that may require some study based on standards or approaches defined by my supervisor, or the proper professional/technical discipline (for example, developing computer application programs, executive secretarial work, mechanical repair, accounting work, social services or parole casework).

I must deal with issues or problems involving careful interpretation, analysis and diagnosis. I typically must identify relevant information to develop solutions or approaches. Developing solutions usually requires in-depth analysis and extensive planning (for example, managing professionals, forecasting demographic trends, solving multi-disciplinary and/or cross- department problems).

I must deal with unique issues or problems that no one has previously addressed, either inside or outside my Department or school building. A combination of inventiveness, experimentation and intuition are needed to come up with new solutions.
